History

Very little is known about the place, even pictures only show the outside,  and then only 1 shows the name.  From information from my friend Tony who remembers it from the 1960s,  the door was very odd,  the ceilings very high, and it was frequented by working men,  mostly in work clothes,  who would not have passed muster as far as the dress code that was current in the Royal Bell Hotel next door.
My own theory is that The Shades had a "beer only" license,  where as the hotel next door would have sold wines and spirits as well, this might have been because of the cost,  and also the 2 establishments had separate  license holders, so loss of one license would not affect the other.
