BROMLEY BOROUGH  LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Dunn's of Bromley

Dunn's of Bromley - a notable local business, c1710 to 1967

We have been fortunate to see a photograph album relating to Dunn's, mainly covering the period from the War to the early 1950s. This  had been acquired by a former employee,  93 year old Fred Spalding, who kindly donated them to Bromley Archives (via BBLHS) in April 2024.

Dunn's was a well known and important furniture store on the east side of Bromley Market Square. The current building  (now sub-divided) was designed by Bertram Carter in conjunction with the last owner/manager Geoffrey Dunn, himself a noted  furnishings designer . This replaced the previous Arts and Crafts building of 1930 which was destroyed by bombing during the disastrous night of 16th/17th April 1941. Pictures of the current and previous buildings, and the interim restoration, are included in the album on later pages. In addition to their Market Square premises, they also had a big store in Widmore Road, on the corner of what is now Kentish Way, and a furniture depository in Park Road, now converted to flats.

Mr. Spalding also had a second album with pictures of central Bromley in the early years of the 20th century.  Although owned by Geoffrey Dunn, It clearly predates him and it is not clear if it was prepared for his grandfather, Henry Dunn, or acquired for interest.
