Stockwell College - Bromley Palace

The rather grandly named Bromley or Bishop's Palace which in 1935 became Stockwell Training College and later Bromley Civic Centre, until its (possibly) final transformation into a housing development, has been the subject of visits by the Society and many pictures of the building and the park can be found on this site (mainly in Activities).

The material below was collected by one of our founding members, Michael Rawcliffe, who taught at the Training College for several years. In addition to a small number of pictures, the bulk of the material relates to the years leading up to the College's closure in June, 1980. After further additional building, the Council moved from the Old Town Hall in Tweedy Road (or the new one if compared with the even older Town Hall once situated in the Market Square) in 1982, before again moving to new premises at Bromley South in 2025. At present (November 2025) the detailed development of the site is unclear, although the core building, the Grade II listed Palace, will remain as it is.

Below the pictures are a series of "pdf" documents covering the history of Stockwell College, work by its students and the commemorative event prior to its closure. They can be viewed in your Web browser or downloaded.
