NAAFI Roll of Honour 1939-1943

NAAFI Roll of Honour 1939-1943

In 2010 I was working as a volunteer at the Sense charity shop in Hayes, Kent,  when an old picture frame was donated.  At first sight it looked very battered and worthless,  but on closer inspection the contents proved invaluable.  I at first thought,  misread the title,  and had it to be from 1939 to 1945,  but for some reason it was from 1939 to 1943,  meaning that this most most likely produced half way though the war.  The frame is also interesting in that it appears to be locally made,  I think from old NAAFI tea crates.  As to the source,  well the nearest NAAFI establishment would be at RAF Biggin Hill,  where I was stationed from 1979 to 1985.  I did contact the NAAFI headquarters in 2010 and they seemed none too keen to take any responsibility,  and just wanted a copy for their records.   The Imperial War Museum were more interested,  but their archive system seemed more accustomed to a fixed out door memorial,  rather than something hanging up in my hallway.  In 2010 I had the printed list scanned in,  and in 2019 I have started to look at the names in Ancestry,  and put some more details behind the list of names.  The most memorable group of names were from RAF Waddington, when a parachute bomb had a direct hit on the NAAFI and 7 women were killed.

In the early hours of 9th May 1941, a lone German intruder attacked RAF Waddington - the aircraft dropped a stick of 6 bombs across the technical site, hitting the NAAFI club and causing serious damage.Unfortunately, one of the bombs hit a slit trench outside the club where 11 personnel were sheltering - they were all killed. The victims included seven of the girls who worked in the NAAFI: one of them was the manageress of the club, Constance Raven. The NAAFI was soon rebuilt, and was called the "Raven's Club " in her honour and although the NAAFI is no more, the club still proudly carries her name
