Following her talk about street furniture in south London in June 2016, Sue Hayton kindly gave us permission to use the following pictures. Vent pipes over drains, sewers and culverted rivers are actually quite common but people tend to overlook them amidst all the other poles sticking up on our pavements. Failure to allow for any gas build-up in these situations can and has lead to serious explosions. 

Here are a few examples found by Sue who sadly died in 2018. Their designs vary according to age, from Victorian ornate to modern plain.
