Jubilee Country Park Walk - Friday 6th July 2012

On yet another soggy day on what passed for summer in 2012, a by now hardened band of BBLHS members led by Jennie Randall, Chairman of the Friends of Jubilee Park set out for a guided tour of this rather forgotten area of Bromley. Jennie is seen here gallantly protected by our hard working events organiser, Peter Leigh.

The 62 acre area, once the first home of West Kent Golf Club, was taken over in 1939 by the Thornet Wood Heavy Anti-Aircraft battery as part of the defence of London. With accommodation for up to 200 people along with all the associated buildings, as well as the gun emplacements, the previously bucolic site was seriously changed.
After the war, the site was pretty much left to decay until it became a potential site for housing development. However, to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, Bromley Council purchased the site and started to make it a worthwhile recreation area. Today, this work is carried on by Jennie and her colleagues.
On  the left is the last remaining coppiced oak tree, planted in the17th century. Above left is a field of rare corky-fruited water dropwart. These and other delights can be found and identified with the help of information boards erected by the Council.

Jennie has written a short but fascinating illustrated history of the site and what is being done to conserve and develop the park. Priced at only £5, this is available from Petts Wood Library in Frankswood Avenue. For further information, why not visit the park's website?
